Whiteface Mountain
Overview
Located 70 miles (110km) north of New York and just eight miles from Lake Placid, Whiteface Mountain has a humungous (relative to other ski resorts in NY state) vertical drop of 3,350ft. This is the reason why it is also the only resort in the eastern US to have hosted the winter Olympics. With 211 skiable acres, 97% of the mountain's 67 trails are covered with snow-making equipment. For accommodation and other activities, Lake Placid serves as the resort's centre with a good range of accommodation from B&Bs to four-star hotels. Known to the locals as 'Iceface', the mountain can be a nightmare to ski if conditions are poor – but hit it on a good day and you'll wonder what all the fuss is about.
