Taos

The southernmost major ski resort in the USA, Taos, has the truly unique charm of New Mexico. As with most American resorts, the skiing is a slight way from the accommodation.

Taos town is 17 miles away and is an enjoyably arty venue with lots of Native American culture on show. It is a compact little town and there isn't a great range of accommodation, but there are some decent eateries and shops. The setting is stunning, down on the desert valley, with the Southern Rockies up above. The town is actually on the same latitude as Rome.

Taos Ski Valley is a resort run by skiers for skiers - a place where the simple pleasures of pure alpine skiing prevail. Therefore, snowboarding is not allowed!

The ski area, with Taos Ski Valley resort at the base, bans boarders. The skiing is good for all abilities, with some very challenging terrain for experts as long as they are willing to hike for it. The snow record is reasonable and this is protected by a limit of 4800 people allowed on the mountain at the same time. One of the best ski schools in the USA helps beginners to flourish, while Taos also has some of the best childcare around. Not a massive resort, but a different Rockies experience with the New Mexico touch.
