Sunday River
Overview
Sunday River is another of the American Skiing Company's flagship resorts and is found in the Appalachian Mountains. It's very well laid out over 8 mountains, each of which caters to different ski abilities. Beginners and intermediates benefit most, with loads of varied terrain. Advanced skiers are not so spoilt, apart from a few moguls and steep terrain on 'White Cap'. Boarders will find Sunday River a good place to learn, with a separate area in which to ride. The snow is pretty decent, but the resort is also well served by snowmaking machines that cover over 90% of the runs (the biggest coverage in the USA). Most people stay in nearby Newry and Bethel, which are friendly and have a reasonable selection of eateries, but offer limited nightlife for party animals. Neither is overly blessed when it comes to ambience. Non-skiers might find themselves bored fairly quickly, unless they have a car to tour in.
Overall, Sunday caters for families, with uncrowded runs, top service and good tuition. The skiing isn't consistently challenging, but is practical and well organised.
