Canyon Ski Area

Canyon Ski Area

Canyon Ski Area

Overview

One of the latest additions to the American Skiing Company list, The Canyons is 28 miles east of Salt Lake City. Potentially it could be the largest ski mountain in the US. It is very new, with $200m of investment, an excellent lift system (no queues) and plenty of terrain. For beginners the nursery runs can be crowded. However the ski school has a good reputation, as does the childcare offered. Intermediates have lots of choice, although the runs are relatively short. Experts will really enjoy some steep stuff but, while the snow record is good, Canyons doesn't have the deepest powder. You will have to access nearby Deer Valley and Park City for more variety. Boarders have masses to play on, with a specially developed park, off-piste and half-pipes.

Canyons is still in its infancy and remains incomplete to date. The slope-side traffic-free village is expected to be completed in the next 5 years, but at present most people stay in Park City and take the free bus up. There is very limited après-ski (only one pub) at the Canyons base, so you will have to visit Park City for nightlife and restaurants - these aren't bad but it all winds up by 1am.

When completed The Canyons will be no doubt be an excellent destination resort, but today it is still worth skiing as part of the Park City Pass.
