Canaan Valley
Overview
Situated in West Virginia, Canaan is 185 miles (300km) west of Washington DC. There is a huge choice of accommodation nearby, but sadly none of it is slopeside. Visitors often complain that the three lifts are painfully slow, but it's still a popular family resort.
The average annual snowfall is 3.8m (12.5ft) and the summit elevation is 4,000ft above sea level. 34 trails offer a vertical drop of 850ft, but advanced skiers will find the neighbouring ski area of Timberline (just two miles away) a better choice. For non-skiers there's tubing, ice-skating, swimming and spa facilities.
