Alpine Valley
Overview
This small, quite charming area near Troy, Wisconsin, is just across the border from Illinois and 55km from Milwaukee. Easily accessed from Chicago, Alpine Valley has a surprising number of lifts – 11 chairlifts and five tows – but, with ten rather short, tree-lined slopes, this is definitely not a destination area. The vertical drop of 388ft says it all – but it's one of many similar spots in north-central USA worth visiting if you're driving past.
Like many of America's small resorts, it makes the most of its potential by having night-skiing. The resort gets about 150cm of natural snow a year, but makes most of its own, with 100% coverage.
