Sinaia
Overview
Previously the venue for the Romanian royal family's summer residence, Sinaia has some splendid, if somewhat dilapidated, architecture. It also offers the largest skiing area in Romania (40km). Most of the skiing caters for beginners and intermediates, but there is quite a lot of off-piste for more challenging skiing. The pistes, however, are very poorly marked. There is little for non-skiers to do and the food and customer service can leave a fair amount to be desired. The town lacks a dependable tourist infrastructure and there are obvious signs of poverty all around.
Overall, Sinaia offers reasonably varied skiing, but is a resort in need of investment, even to bring it up to Poiana's standards.
