Bled is a quiet and beautiful lakeside spa resort, with access to three ski areas in the Julian Alps - Straza, Kobla and Vogel. The first has only three kilometres of pistes, but the other two, a 40-minute journey away, have a total of 71km of skiing. All three are bus-linked. Most of the skiing is for beginners and intermediates, with a reasonable variety of terrain at all three. Straza offers the additional advantage of night skiing. Snow reliability can be a fair distance short of brilliant.
The nearest international airport is Klagenfurt, 70km away in Austria. Eateries and nightlife are fairly limited, but there are a few bars for those wanting to enjoy boozy evenings. The ski schools are very efficient. As a real attraction, Bled's prices are about a third of those in Western Europe.
