Le Grand Bornand
Overview
Not far from La Clusaz is the smaller combined resort of Le Grand-Bornand/Chinaillon. Only 50km from Geneva, it is a plausible weekend venue for those who are looking for a more traditional French Alpine experience. The skiing is great for beginners and intermediates, although experts may be a bit under-whelmed and the resort sits at a comparatively low altitude. The ski area is conveniently organised offering some good off-piste at the back of the Lachat site. Après-ski is quite sufficient, with a variety of eateries and a couple of clubs. Your Aravis ski pass also allows you to ski at La Clusaz, only 6km away by road.
Overall, Le Grand-Bornand is a smaller, well-organised resort that is especially suitable for families. It's traditional, too, so for those who can't abide 1960s concrete monstrosities and prefer the more quintessential Alpine experience, Le Grand-Bornand is a good choice.
