La Mongie
Overview
The biggest ski area in the French Pyrenees is shared by Barèges (a spa village set in steep, narrow valley) and La Mongie (an ugly, purpose-built resort). Only 48km (30 miles) from Lourdes, the nearest international airport is Toulouse. These two bases share 120km of runs, accessed by 50 lifts. The terrain is particularly suited to intermediates, with picturesque tree-lined runs above Barèges and an open bowl above La Mongie. When conditions are good, the off-piste is superb. La Mongie makes a good family destination – the nightlife is minimal and compared to the Alps, the lift lines are non-existent and the prices very low.
