Heiligenblut
Overview
This is an unremarkable Carinthian ski area with a remarkable history. Its name – Holy Blood – involved the discovery of a Danish General found dead in an avalanche with a phial of blood, reputed to be that of Jesus, hidden in a self-inflicted gash in his leg. Heiligenblut's other claim to fame is its proximity to Austria's highest mountain, the dramatic Grossglockner.
The skiing, with 17 lifts, is quite extensive and varied – but awkwardly put together, with a return journey on a gondola required to access the most challenging slopes at Gjaidtroghöhe (2,902m).
