Overview

Spread over a complex of facilities, cabins and a hotel, the Kuusamon Tropiikki’s got all the ingredients for a fun-filled family trip. We’re talking a tropical-themed swimming pool with a kids’ zone, a bowling alley and an adventure park with climbing frames and a gaming lounge. When it’s time to unwind, the whole gang can head to the spa and relax in the sauna and the steam room, then it’s into O’Leary’s sports bar to swap ski stories over a tipple.

Location-wise, you’re perfectly placed to soak up Finland’s snow-globe scenery. The hotel’s in a super peaceful spot right next to a lake, and there are snowy pine trees every way you look. The slopes are a 20 minute drive away over in Ruka, and there’s a free ski bus that’ll drop you off and pick you up every day, so all you have to do is sit back and watch the wintery wilderness go by out the window.

When it comes to rooms, you can pick between a family room in the main hotel or a fully equipped apartment in the annexe, complete with a sauna, a huge balcony and a kitchenette if you fancy whipping up a quick dish. You’ll get a buffet breakfast included each morning, or you can upgrade to half board for buffets in the evening too. Plus, there’s a handy 24-hour kiosk in the hotel, which is just the ticket for a late-night snack.

Family room – 1-4: Twin beds, double sofa bed in bedroom, shower and WC.

Annexe

All rooms are non-smoking and have a flatscreen TV, free WiFi, hairdryer, fireplace with fire wood, washing machine and heated drying cabinet for ski gear. Apartments also have a kitchenette with an oven, hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, kettle, toaster, dishwasher and coffee machine. Towels, linen and end-of-stay cleaning are included.

Annexe 2 bedroom apartment with large balcony and sauna - sleeps 2-5: Twin bedroom, living area with double sofa bed, kitchenette, private shower, WC, large balcony an sauna. This apartment is in the annexe building.

Family room - sleeps 1-4: Twin beds, extra double sofa bed in bedroom when booked for three or four, private shower and WC.

Cots are available to hire for approx. €15 per night, payable locally.

About Ruka

One of the world's first resorts to allow you to book your lift pass over the Internet, Ruka is Finland's best-known resort. Right up in Lapland near the Russian border, Ruka opens in October, offering some of the earliest skiing in the world. There are even snow cannons to boost the already decent snowfall. This really is wilderness country and with short winter days, night skiing is provided to get the most out of your lift pass. The skiing provides for all levels (to a limited degree) and you can ski to your door, but there are many other winter pursuits in which to indulge. Going here isn't just a ski holiday- it is an Arctic experience. Après-ski is limited but lively, as you would expect for such an isolated destination, but there are 9 hotels and cabins to rent, so Ruka isn't totally off the beaten track.
