About Ellmau
Ellmau is a relaxed, beginner-friendly resort that works well for first-timers and intermediates looking for an easy-going week on the slopes. There are nursery areas at both ends of the village, making it simple to start learning close to where you’re staying, and the nearby Astberg mountain offers quiet, uncrowded slopes that are ideal for practising new skills and building confidence. Once you’re ready to explore further, you can access the wider SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser–Brixental, with 288km of mainly tree-lined blues, reds, and long valley runs that make it one of the best cruising areas in the Alps.
The village itself has a peaceful, traditional atmosphere, with wood-clad buildings, a striking old Gothic church at its centre, and the impressive Wilder Kaiser mountains rising dramatically in the background. It feels authentic and unhurried rather than busy or built-up, which adds to its appeal for a more relaxed ski holiday.
Après-ski is sociable but not wild, with a good selection of bars and cafés where you can meet up after skiing. Prices are generally reasonable, so it’s easy to enjoy a few drinks without overspending, and the vibe stays friendly rather than party-focused. Accommodation is varied, ranging from larger, comfortable hotels with full facilities to smaller, family-run guesthouses that add to the village’s welcoming feel.
For time off the slopes, the Kaiserbad Ellmau is a major highlight. It features swimming pools with slides and fountains, tennis courts, and a climbing wall, making it a great all-weather option for families or mixed-ability groups.
