Overview

Probably Scotland's most well-known ski area, Cairngorm is closely affiliated with Aviemore, 16km away. A shuttle bus operates between the two. Still some way behind Alpine resorts in terms of infrastructure, there have nonetheless been positive changes and the completion of the funicular railway will be a welcome addition.

With 39km of pistes, excellent ski schools and good boarding facilities, Cairngorm is one of the more popular Scottish destinations. Added to that, Aviemore has plenty of non-ski activities and local whisky distilleries and makes quite a pleasant venue. However, as with all Scottish resorts, snow can be very unreliable. When it is plentiful, the pistes can be overcrowded and there isn't a great selection for more advanced skiers. Always remember that skiing in Scotland is no replacement for a week in the Alps. With that in mind, you can have a great time, particularly mid-week when the slopes are less crowded. There is some reasonable après-ski, but only when you have returned to Aviemore. Your best bet is to keep an eye on the snow reports - be prepared to travel at the drop of hat.
