Zermatt Resort Info

Zermatt skiing

Zermatt, according to some reporters, is as near as anywhere to perfection, so long as you are an intermediate or advanced skier. With vast and varied skiing that extends via a link with Cervinia into Italy, along with awesome scenery, Zermatt really is a great resort. The only downsides: a lack of choice for beginners and a bit of a trek to the lifts at times.

Zermatt ski resort

With amazing restaurants both on and off the mountain, a beautiful town that is traffic free apart from the electric taxis and great nightlife to suit all tastes, life down in resort isn't too shabby either. Add to this some great accommodation and good shopping and its easy to see why Zermatt is often described as "the perfect ski holiday destination". Only downside: as with a lot of Switzerland, it's not cheap.

Snow Overview - Switzerland  (snow news updated 31-Jan-2012)

There was a huge variety of different conditions across of featured Swiss resorts on Monday 30th January. A handful of locations such as St Mortiz (90/118cm) enjoyed pleasant, clear blue skies after a healthy dusting of snow on Saturday 28th January. It was a similar story at Davos (138/229cm) which is now mostly back to normal following the World Economic Forum there last week. Other featured Swiss resorts such as Villars (40/250cm) however experienced low, heavy cloud cover creating poor visibility and light snowfall on Monday although the resort still managed to open 32 out of a possible 34 lifts. The temperature is forecast to drop as we move towards next weekend, getting lower than -20C in some locations at the end of this week. This is cold so make sure you wrap up warm, and if you have mitts this could be a good time to use them.

European Weather Outlook

Cloudy and snowy skies are expected to loiter over the vast majority of European resorts over the coming days although only a light level of snowfall, around 1-2cm each day, is anticipated throughout the week. Sunshine is then expected to make a come back for the vast majority of resorts by the end of this week or the start of next week. The southern French Alpine resort of Isola 2000 however could receive up to 27cm of fresh snow on Tuesday 31st January, bucking the trend of just a dusting. The other weather news of note is that temperatures are set to drop, getting below -20C in many locations by the end of this week, so make sure you have some nice warm layers to put on.
