In a convenient position, just 3 mins from the main street, the Atlanta is a simple, good-value choice for those wanting a relaxed atmosphere.

Bedrooms: 29. Rooms have bath or shower, wc, TV, telephone, hairdryer, safe and radio. Some have balcony with Matterhorn view. Some single rooms with washbasin only are also available.

Meals: Buffet breakfast daily & 4-course dinner 6 nights a week (usually not on Fridays). Please note that this hotel cannot cater for vegetarians or other special dietary requirements.

Facilities: Attractive dining room with adjoining bar has great Matterhorn views (bar open limited hours); lift. Ski bus stop 3 mins from hotel.

Special Attractions: • Christmas and New Year gala dinners included • Any curlers staying here will be able to pick up tips from Mr Bielser, a former European Curling champion.

Zermatt skiing

Zermatt, according to some reporters, is as near as anywhere to perfection, so long as you are an intermediate or advanced skier. With vast and varied skiing that extends via a link with Cervinia into Italy, along with awesome scenery, Zermatt really is a great resort. The only downsides: a lack of choice for beginners and a bit of a trek to the lifts at times.

With amazing restaurants both on and off the mountain, a beautiful town that is traffic free apart from the electric taxis and great nightlife to suit all tastes, life down in resort isn't too shabby either. Add to this some great accommodation and good shopping and its easy to see why Zermatt is often described as "the perfect ski holiday destination". Only downside: as with a lot of Switzerland, it's not cheap.
