Wengen Resort Info

Wengen, which shares the Jungfrau pass with Grindelwald and Murren, is most famous for its dramatic downhill course, the 'Lauberhorn'. It's also known as one of those classic Swiss ski resorts that is relaxed and has stunning scenery. Don't come here solely to bash as many pistes as possible. Wengen is traffic free and only accessible only by train from Lauterbrunnen. Many skiers will then take the train on up to Kleine Scheidegg, so a good knowledge of the timetable is vital to avoid queues although the newly renovated cable-car to Mannlichen provides a quicker alternative into the main area. As with Grindelwald, the views of the Eiger and the surrounding mountains are awesome. Both resorts share the problem of unreliable snow, as the pistes don't go much higher than 2000m. The skiing is very good for intermediates and beginners and the ski schools are excellent. Advanced skiers and boarders don't have too many pistes to try, but off-piste is adequate.

Many people go to Wengen simply for the atmosphere. It's sedate, stress- and traffic-free and 'old-school'. The village has excellent hotels that provide most of the dining, with some superb mountain eateries to boot. Nightlife is fairly restrained but non-skiers have plenty to occupy themselves with. In particular there is the option of the train, providing access to the valley below, to Murren, and to Interlaken. When the weather is fine, many people are happy just to sit out, enjoy the scenery and soak up the ambience of the place. It isn't just skiing in Wengen, you know. More Wengen resort information

Snow Overview - Switzerland  (snow news updated 31-Jan-2012)

There was a huge variety of different conditions across of featured Swiss resorts on Monday 30th January. A handful of locations such as St Mortiz (90/118cm) enjoyed pleasant, clear blue skies after a healthy dusting of snow on Saturday 28th January. It was a similar story at Davos (138/229cm) which is now mostly back to normal following the World Economic Forum there last week. Other featured Swiss resorts such as Villars (40/250cm) however experienced low, heavy cloud cover creating poor visibility and light snowfall on Monday although the resort still managed to open 32 out of a possible 34 lifts. The temperature is forecast to drop as we move towards next weekend, getting lower than -20C in some locations at the end of this week. This is cold so make sure you wrap up warm, and if you have mitts this could be a good time to use them.

European Weather Outlook

Cloudy and snowy skies are expected to loiter over the vast majority of European resorts over the coming days although only a light level of snowfall, around 1-2cm each day, is anticipated throughout the week. Sunshine is then expected to make a come back for the vast majority of resorts by the end of this week or the start of next week. The southern French Alpine resort of Isola 2000 however could receive up to 27cm of fresh snow on Tuesday 31st January, bucking the trend of just a dusting. The other weather news of note is that temperatures are set to drop, getting below -20C in many locations by the end of this week, so make sure you have some nice warm layers to put on.
