Davos Resort Info

One of the first spots in the Alps to be used as a skiing venue and also a 'health' spa, Davos is a large, outstretched town 1 ¾ hours from Zurich by car or 2 ½ hours by train. It has access to 325km of pistes and is linked to Klosters. As a whole, there is something for every type of skier, although beginners don't fair as well. Intermediates have lots of long blues and reds to exploit, while advanced skiers have some good off-piste. The snow is generally good at the higher levels and some fantastic off-piste. What the town lacks for in charm, it makes up for with its fantastic variety for skiers and boarders alike and with the new Parsennbahn railway, access to the slopes is quick and easy. For boarders the off-piste is a major attraction, as is the designated park. Cross-country skiers also have much territory to cover.

The town itself, split into 2 parts, Dorf and Platz, doesn't possess the charm of Klosters, but life off the slopes is lively with 5 nightclubs to choose from as well as lots of bars and restaurants. In addition there are many other things to do apart from skiing. You can take a scenic train ride, use the largest natural ice rink in Europe, visit the winter sport museum, or watch an ice hockey match. On top of that are the great shops and excellent restaurants (on and off mountain).

It is expensive and fur coats abound, however, it does cater for all - if you can afford it.

Snow Overview - Switzerland  (snow news updated 31-Jan-2012)

There was a huge variety of different conditions across of featured Swiss resorts on Monday 30th January. A handful of locations such as St Mortiz (90/118cm) enjoyed pleasant, clear blue skies after a healthy dusting of snow on Saturday 28th January. It was a similar story at Davos (138/229cm) which is now mostly back to normal following the World Economic Forum there last week. Other featured Swiss resorts such as Villars (40/250cm) however experienced low, heavy cloud cover creating poor visibility and light snowfall on Monday although the resort still managed to open 32 out of a possible 34 lifts. The temperature is forecast to drop as we move towards next weekend, getting lower than -20C in some locations at the end of this week. This is cold so make sure you wrap up warm, and if you have mitts this could be a good time to use them.

European Weather Outlook

Cloudy and snowy skies are expected to loiter over the vast majority of European resorts over the coming days although only a light level of snowfall, around 1-2cm each day, is anticipated throughout the week. Sunshine is then expected to make a come back for the vast majority of resorts by the end of this week or the start of next week. The southern French Alpine resort of Isola 2000 however could receive up to 27cm of fresh snow on Tuesday 31st January, bucking the trend of just a dusting. The other weather news of note is that temperatures are set to drop, getting below -20C in many locations by the end of this week, so make sure you have some nice warm layers to put on.
