The recent fresh snow in Austria is still being enjoyed on the upper glacial slopes. It’s all melted where it fell low down now but it’s still around above 2800m.

There is no skiing available in France at the moment. The glaciers at Les Deux Alpes and Tignes both closed at the end of August. The winter ski season will kick off at the end of November in locations such as Tignes and Val Thorens.

Australian resorts have received another snowfall. 10cm fell at Mt Hotham but unfortunately Ben Lomond, on Tasmania, has had to close again due to a lack of snow.

All of our featured New Zealand resorts have received fresh snow since last Thursday’s report on 2nd September. Unfortunately unsettled and windy weather on Monday 6th September affected many of the ski areas, forcing them to close for the day.

Fresh snow has fallen on the Three Valleys ski area in Chile over the weekend, enhancing the riding conditions.

Argentinean skiing is still pretty good thanks to loads of snow recently. The upper slopes of Cerro Catedral have more than three metres of snow on them which should ensure good skiing and boarding right until the end of the season.

Snow reports for Austria Austria

Last weeks snow is still lingering around up on the glaciers. It’s all melted off the lower slopes though as summer has returned for the time being.

Once again, the most skiing available is at Hintertux (95cm) where nine lifts were running on Monday 6th September and there was nearly 600m of vertical to ski and 20km of marked pistes. Stick to those pistes though as the off-piste snow is fairly thin and there are bits of glacial ice beginning to poke through. These will all be covered up again when the winter snow arrives.

There’s some snow in the forecast for Austria on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th September. It won’t fall as low as 1400m like it did last week but it should give the Hintertux and Molltal glaciers another good boost.

Snow reports for France France

The summer ski season is now over at Tignes, Val d’Isere and Les Deux Alpes. Maintenance work will take place between now and when they open for the winter 2010/11 season.

Snow reports for Switzerland Switzerland

Strong winds at Saas Fee (112cm) on Monday 6th September unfortunately forced the area to close for snowsports for the day. The wind is expected to drop on Tuesday 7th September so the slopes and ski facilities should be able to reopen then.

Zermatt (172cm) was open for snowsports on Monday 6th with all six summer pistes prepared, which includes four red runs and two blue runs. This provided 17km of skiable terrain.

Cloudy weather is forecast for most of this week at the Swiss resorts which should bring fresh snow to the glacier ski areas. The heaviest snowfall is expected through the night of Tuesday 7th September into Wednesday morning, delivering up to 37cm of new snow over that period.

Snow reports for Italy Italy

Cervinia (60cm) and Val Senales (100cm) are both open for snowsports and provide great skiing thanks to snowfall in August. The most recent snowfall was reported at Val Senales which received heavy snowfall on 31st August, and this significantly improved the skiing conditions.

Cloudy weather is forecast at both Italian resorts this week and this could bring fresh snowfall. The heaviest snow is expected at Cervinia where over 25cm of new snow could land through Tuesday night, 7th September, into Wednesday morning.

Snow reports for USA Snow reports for North America North America

The Blackcomb Glacier at Whistler has now closed for the summer ski season. They will reopen again in November for the start of the winter season.

Good skiing can be enjoyed on the Palmer snowfield at Timberline (80cm) in America at the moment. The Palmer Public Park is open but the halfpipe will not be open for the rest of the summer season. A mixture of sunny and cloudy weather is forecast this week with a chance of snow falling about the glacier at times.

South America

Chile

Fresh snow fell over weekend in the Three Valleys ski area, which includes El Colorado (50/70cm), La Parva (155cm) and Valle Nevado (50cm). Up to 20cm of new snow fell on Saturday 4th September.

Spring riding conditions are reported at Portillo (23/79cm). The snow cover on the higher slopes remains firmly packed for longer than the snow on the lower slopes so if you prefer carving on more consolidated snow then head up high.

Chapa Verde is closed for the season.

Predominantly sunny weather is forecast all week across the Chilean resorts and the temperature is expected to increase as the week progresses. It should reach around 5°C at mid mountain level, which would provide classical spring riding conditions with firmly packed snow in the morning that softens through the day.

Argentina

Cerro Catedral (80/330cm) and Chapelco (55/220cm) have both got great early spring conditions. Recent storms dumped loads of snow on both resorts which greatly increased the snow base. All of the upper runs are in excellent condition and off-piste possibilities feel endless.

It looks like being a mild and sunny week at all of our featured Argentinean resorts. The temperature could reach 12°C at 1100m and 4°C at 2100m. There’s plenty of existing snow on the upper slopes so it should be a good spring.

Australia

It’s been snowing again in Australia, continuing their snowiest winter for 25 years. Most of our featured resorts received between 5 and 10cm of fresh snow on Monday 6th September. This generally fell on the upper slopes as it was fairly warm lower down.

Thredbo (183cm) has 13 of its 14 lifts running at the moment and the park is also open. There are kickers of all sizes, from 5ft to 40ft, so if you fancy something a little different head over there and give the park a try.

Unfortunately the snow that fell at Ben Lomond (5/10cm) a couple of weeks ago has mostly melted now. The snow cover on the mountain is very patchy and they have been forced to close for snowsports once again. They hope to reopen if they get more significant snow.

The weather at the Australian mountains this week can be split largely into two halves. The first half of the week should be warm and sunny then colder and snowier weather is expected towards the weekend. 15cm of fresh snow is expected at Mt Hotham (122/178cm).

New Zealand

Inclement weather on Monday 6th September forced many of the New Zealand resorts to close for the day.

Mount Dobson (275cm), Mount Hutt (190cm), Mount Olympus (135cm), Mt Lyford (300cm), Porter Heights (135cm),  Rainbow (75cm), Treble Cone (148cm), Turoa (183cm) and Whakapapa (139cm) were all forced to close for the day. The access road to Rainbow was flooded but this is expected to be cleared by Tuesday 7th September. The strong wind is forecast to ease for Tuesday 7th so the other resorts will hopefully be able to reopen for skiing then too.

Snowsports could be enjoyed at Cardona (105cm) on Monday 6th September but the resort will be closed for a few days from Tuesday 7th September in order that maintenance can be carried out on the oxidation pond.

Coronet Peak (105cm) was also open for snowsports on Monday but the snow was wet on and off the groomed runs due to the wet weather affecting the area. The skies are forecast to clear up on Wednesday 8th September then cloudy and possibly snowy weather will move in towards the end of the week.

The Remarkables (100cm) was the only other New Zealand resort we feature that was open on Monday. Like at Coronet Peak there was some wet weather but the precipitation was also falling as snow as low down as 300m. This combination provided very spring-like conditions with soft and heavy snow low down.

The good news is that fresh snow is forecast at times this week at all of the New Zealand resorts. Treble Cone is forecast the most snow with up to 32cm expected by Tuesday 14th September.
