Ski Åre, Sweden
Skiing in Åre, Sweden

Åre is probably the most well known Swedish ski resort following it's hosting of the Alpine World Championships in 2007. It's not featured in many brochures but it's definitely worth visiting, especially if you want to go somewhere where you can not only ski, but also try your hand at other activities such as snowmobiling or husky sledging.

The resort itself is spread along a beautiful valley and is set by the edge of frozen lake which provides a stunning backdrop for skiers and boarders and the starting point for many of the other activities on offer.

The locals all speak English and the ski school has a great reputation for all ages.

The ski area is broken up into three different areas:

Åre - the main ski area where the World championship downhill slope and mogul course can be attempted. There is also some good off-piste, tree lined skiing for those bad light days and a half-pipe.

Bjornen - perfect for families with younger children. The little ones can take the path through the woods where bears who talk and sing keep them entertained. The excellent ski school based here has English speaking instructors and a crèche is available.

Duved - great for families with children who are already skiing and intermediates - connected to Are by bus.

Apres Ski and Eating Out
Off the mountain, this quirky but attractive town with a Vermont/ New England feel to it offers some great restaurants including some lively après-ski. It’s nickname is ‘Little Stockholm’ and is popular with the young at the weekends.

We had a wonderful meal in Restaurant Karolinen (www.karolinen.se) where we cooked our own meat and fish on a hot stone. The restaurant is located on the edge of the lake and so we ended a very memorable snowmobile safari here with a welcome drink in the Snow Bar before dinner.

On the mountain, enjoy an extended lunch at Buustamons restaurant followed by a schnapps or liquer tasting session downstairs at Sweden’s smallest, legal mountain destillery. (Bookings recommended: + 46 (0) 647 - 531 75)

We flew with SAS to Stockholm and then on to Åre Östersund. It’s then a 40 minute transfer by bus. Alternatively you can fly with Norwegian to Trondheim which is just over the border and only 120km by hire car.

Other Activities
If you want to mix skiing with some other activites then Camp Åre (www.campare.se) offers everything from dog sledding, snowkiting, snowshoeing, Icelandic hourses, icekart, heli-skiing and ski mobiling (we did a 2 hour evening tour up the hill opposite the resort which was exhilarating. From the top you get stunning views across the valley and and lake to the town and the World Cup pistes.)

Don't miss out on a snowmobiling safari

You can also put your nerve to the test and try the longest zip line course in Europe. This starts just below the top of one of the main runs and sees you throwing yourself across a ravine on 3 different wires at high speed - brilliant if you don't mind being 90 metres up in the air.

Where to stay
The resort offers accommodation to suit everyone from the Holiday Camp for families which offers English speaking childcare for children aged from 0 years to the 5 star Copperhill Mountain Lodge, designed by architect Peter Bohlin which is situated at the far end of the resort with wonderful views and it’s own poma lift to give you access to the slopes. The hotel incorporates a wonderful spa where you can get a relaxing message or have a soothing treatment. There's also a games room for children, a ski hire shop and a relaxed après-ski bar.
