Åre is probably the most well known Swedish ski resort following it's hosting of the Alpine World Championships in 2007. It's not featured in many brochures but it's definitely worth visiting, especially if you want to go somewhere where you can not only ski, but also try your hand at other activities such as snowmobiling or husky sledging.
The resort itself is spread along a beautiful valley and is set by the edge of frozen lake which provides a stunning backdrop for skiers and boarders and the starting point for many of the other activities on offer.
The locals all speak English and the ski school has a great reputation for all ages.
The ski area is broken up into three different areas: Åre - the main ski area where the World championship downhill slope and mogul course can be attempted. There is also some good off-piste, tree lined skiing for those bad light days and a half-pipe.
Bjornen - perfect for families with younger children. The little ones can take the path through the woods where bears who talk and sing keep them entertained. The excellent ski school based here has English speaking instructors and a crèche is available.
Duved - great for families with children who are already skiing and intermediates - connected to Are by bus.
