Once considered the poor neighbour of Val d’ Isere, the catered chalet scene in Tignes has improved significantly in the last 5 years. Whilst the seriously luxurious operators still choose to base themselves in Val d’ Isere, Tignes now boasts a large number of super-smart chalets run by mid-range tour operators that won’t break the bank. The result is that even those with modest budgets can often enjoy a ski in/ski out location and the luxury of a hot-tub and sauna at the end of the day. Ski Total and Skiworld both have a number of five-star chalets, in highly desirable locations (beside the lake, or adjacent to lifts in Tignes Val Claret) at three-star prices. Larger chalethotel properties are also common in Tignes, and those looking for a deal can often find a last-minute bargain.
