La Folie Douce comes to Alpe d'Huez
If you haven't experienced the unique brand of Apres Ski at La Folie Douce then you've missed out on what has become one of the French Alps' most popular, if expensive apres ski venues in three of the biggest resorts.
Very aptly translated into English as "Sweet Madness", the Folie now has a presence in Val d'Isere, Meribel and Val Thorens and now plans to open its newest venue in Alpe d'Huez in the coming season.
For the uninitiated, La Folie Douce is like no other mountain restaurant or apres ski venue. The fact that it combines the two is unique in itself. From lunchtime, there's a self service cafeteria and an a la carte restaurant, plus a huge outdoor terrace with bar and VIP area. Then after the lunchtime rush, the whole thing transforms into a huge, open-air nightclub, with a DJ, singer, several live musicians and a superb atmosphere! Patrons are actively encouraged to dance on the tables and showered with champagne by the bar staff every half-hour or so.
The Folie is obliged by local regulations to close its doors in time for people to take the last lift back down if they feel they've had one too many to make the descent to resort on skis. This doesn't stop everybody though, and the runs home can be quite hazardous as slightly inebriated (and some completely pissed) partygoers slalom in and out of each other on day's end moguls.
Prices are on the high side of extortionate, but it's fair to say that you get what you pay for, and that's a brilliant party atmosphere right on the slopes of the best ski resorts that France has to offer!
