Cervinia Resort Info

Based on the Italian side of the Matterhorn, Cervinia is lift-linked to Zermatt, with 200km of its own runs. Because of its high altitude, it has a long season, great snow and is an absolute haven for intermediates. The slopes are superb for cruising and mileage skiing, while beginners will find masses of coverage. Advanced skiers will need to head over into Switzerland for extended challenges, although you'll have to pay extra to cross to Zermatt. Because of its position, the scenery is outstanding, but this can be marred by poor weather and high winds, which can often cause the higher lifts to be closed. If the weather holds, you can usually be guaranteed loads of sun as well as long tree-lined runs. The ski school is getting better but, as with many Italian resorts, childcare is rather limited.

On the downside, Cervinia is not the most attractive resort and is entirely purpose-built. It was founded in the 1930s by Mussolini and still doesn't cater very well for non-skiers. There are good restaurants on and off the mountain, but their prices are nearly as steep as the Matterhorn itself. Weekend crowds can put pressure on the old lift system, but also improve the quality of après-ski. Access from the accommodation to the lifts is inconvenient, requiring an uphill walk.

Overall, Cervinia is great for lower ability skiers and boarders and much cheaper than its Swiss neighbour. Experts, kids and party animals may not find Cervinia ideal, although the first group do have Zermatt nearby to keep them busy.

Snow Overview - Italy  (snow news updated 26-Feb-2017)

Thursday 23rd February was another fun spring like day for our featured Italian resorts. Abundant sunshine and comfortable if not warm temperatures made for lovely ambient conditions. On piste conditions are typical of spring snow, a melt freeze cycle creates firm fast pistes early in the morning tending softer and wetter as the day progresses. From the Sella Ronda in the east to Mont Blanc and The Matterhorn and even in the far south Milky Way, conditions are almost identical. However, like most of the European Alps a change is coming in tonight. Tomorrow is expected to be mostly snowy with light to moderate snow fall almost everywhere. The weekend will be sunny and spring like again, before Italy dives into a week of forecasted heavy snowfall.

European Weather Outlook

It has been a tough week all over the Alps recently with heavy rain, warm temperatures and strong sunshine all negatively impacting snow quality. However, a change is coming and the early signs of its arrival are visible already. Cloud cover will gently increase throughout today as much needed fresh snow and cold temperatures move in tonight. Tomorrow will see cloudy snowy conditions all over the Alps with light to moderate snowfalls expected. The freezing level will quickly drop which means it will snow all the way down to the valley floor. Beyond this sudden change Saturday will bring slightly warmer temperatures by the afternoon with Sunday being a mostly sunny day. A large snow storm is currently is forecast to bring very heavy snowfalls to the Alps next week. It would seem winter is returning from its brief summer vacation, and not a moment too soon. In the Pyrenees a mostly sunny weekend is ahead, no significant snowfall is expected before Tuesday 28th. In far north Scandinavia a slight change to the normal pattern of dull overcast weather. Moderate snowfalls are expected over the next few days. Powder days are unlikely but certainly enough to create excellent on piste conditions.
