    La Plagne skiing

Boasting some superb scenery, particularly from the top of the 3250m Bellecote glacier (which provides summer skiing possibilities) skiing in La Plagne is a true pleasure. Now lift linked with Les Arcs, the resutling "paradiski" area is one of the largest in the world. La Plagne offers skiing for all; beginners and intermediates are very well served while advanced skiers and boarders have lots of off-piste, but fewer truly testing black runs. Boarders and freestyle skiers have the choice of a 2.5 hectare snow park, a half pipe, and a fun park to whet their appetites.

    La Plagne ski resort

La Plagne is made up of 10 'villages', most of which have that purpose built 1960s feel. However, on the upside, this does provide loads of ski in ski out accommodation making La Plagne great for family ski holidays. Each village is self-sufficient with shops, bars and restaurants, although the variety of off-snow activities can be limited. Chambery is the nearest airport (an hour and 45 minutes away), while the ski train goes to Aime, 30 minutes away. All of La Plagne's 'villages' are superbly linked, with a lift system computer-rated as the best in the world.

Top Tip: stay in gorgeous Champagny-en-Vanoise for the traditional Alpine thing and a rapid gondola link into the full La Plagne lift system - plus the chance to ski for a day in nearby Courchevel

Snow Overview - France  (snow news updated 31-Jan-2012)

Heavy snowfall returned to almost all our featured French resorts over the weekend. Cauterets (75/215cm) in the Pyrenees enjoyed 50cm of new snow on Sunday 29th January and Les Deux Alpes (90/300cm) received a whopping 70cm on Saturday 28th January. However, on Monday 30th January, the resort experienced low cloud cover which created poor visibility, but there were 43 lifts open. This theme was common all over France on Monday and although only a few resorts received fresh snow on Monday, the cloud cover combined with the low temperatures means further snowfall could be on the way. The southern French resorts also welcomed fresh snowfall over the weekend. This dramatically improved the pistes as it had been sometime since it had last snowed in the area. For example, Isola 2000 (45/79cm) received a respectful 20cm on Sunday 29th January and it continued to snow lightly in Foux d'Allos (55/85cm) on Monday.

    European Weather Outlook

Cloudy and snowy skies are expected to loiter over the vast majority of European resorts over the coming days although only a light level of snowfall, around 1-2cm each day, is anticipated throughout the week. Sunshine is then expected to make a come back for the vast majority of resorts by the end of this week or the start of next week. The southern French Alpine resort of Isola 2000 however could receive up to 27cm of fresh snow on Tuesday 31st January, bucking the trend of just a dusting. The other weather news of note is that temperatures are set to drop, getting below -20C in many locations by the end of this week, so make sure you have some nice warm layers to put on.
