Chamonix Resort Info

Chamonix skiing

Chamonix is one of the French Alps' flagship resorts, one of its busiest hubs and has some of the best, most challenging skiing too. An expert's paradise, with extensive lift-served off-piste runs including the iconic Vallée Blanche, and some serious high altitude runs at Grands Montets and Brévent. At busy times, you can barely move around central Chamonix for all of the huge off-piste skis, serious looking backpacks and rugged mountain guides.

Chamonix can work for beginners and intermediates too though, you just need to know where to look. Le Tour and Les Houches both offer gentle terrain and tree-lined pistes where you can shelter if the weather closes in. However, you've got to understand Chamonix as it won't suit everyone. It's split into 5 distinct and very seperate ski areas and you will need to use the Chamonix Valley transport system to do the whole thing justice. Le Tour and Les Houches for example are at opposite ends of the valley, nearly 20km apart. The bus and train services are excellent, but having to travel between ski areas isn't every beginner's cup of tea.

The more adventurous will also find that Courmayeur in Italy and even Verbier in Switzerland are accessible for a day trip from Chamonix.

Chamonix is one of the finest ski resorts in the French Alps and offers something for everyone. You must be prepared to put in the effort to get the most out of Chamonix, but if you are then you will find a wealth of Alpine experiences that will have you coming back for years to come.

Chamonix ski resort

Chamonix is a large, bustling town in its own right. Totally different to the purpose built resorts on offer elsewhere in the region. It has a large year-round population and the resort amenities are like no other. The large pedestrianized centre offers a huge choice of shops, bar restuarants and nightclubs. There's even a casino and the range of off-slope activities can seem endless. If you have non-skiers in your group then Chamonix should be at the top of your list as it can keep everyone entertained.

To top it off, Chamonix is uniquely located only 1 hour from Geneva, making it one of the shortest transfers. Uniquely, Chamonix manages to combine this lighting fast transfer with true high-altitude and glacier skiing. Other resorts with similar transfer times (Morzine, for example) can't offer the same high altitude skiing.

Snow Overview - France  (snow news updated 26-Feb-2017)

Thursday 23rd of February was yet another sunny day in France. The general story is of hard packed slopes up high and where the most traffic is but soft, spring like conditions on resort runs. Overall, conditions are very variable on piste. Off piste skiing is limited at the moment due to the warm temperatures and a lack of new snow but looking at the weather forecast, this could all be set to change. Some of the best conditions in France can be found in Les Arcs (48/152cm). Slopes, especially at the top, are well groomed and grippy. They can be hard in places, especially with the amount of holiday traffic, but remain very good overall. Conditions were also good in Montgenevre (150/260cm) where slopes were wel-groomed. They were packed and grippy in the morning but softened up throughout the day. The snow line has been visibly receding in the Chamonix (20/200cm) area recently. Strong sunshine today means that slopes lower day are softening up fast. Up high, however, slopes can be hard packed but are still ultimately very enjoyable. There were early spring conditions in Morzine (30/50cm) and the rest of the Portes du Soleil today. When the slopes begin to soften up, head to Avoriaz (80/110cm) for the best snow.

European Weather Outlook

It has been a tough week all over the Alps recently with heavy rain, warm temperatures and strong sunshine all negatively impacting snow quality. However, a change is coming and the early signs of its arrival are visible already. Cloud cover will gently increase throughout today as much needed fresh snow and cold temperatures move in tonight. Tomorrow will see cloudy snowy conditions all over the Alps with light to moderate snowfalls expected. The freezing level will quickly drop which means it will snow all the way down to the valley floor. Beyond this sudden change Saturday will bring slightly warmer temperatures by the afternoon with Sunday being a mostly sunny day. A large snow storm is currently is forecast to bring very heavy snowfalls to the Alps next week. It would seem winter is returning from its brief summer vacation, and not a moment too soon. In the Pyrenees a mostly sunny weekend is ahead, no significant snowfall is expected before Tuesday 28th. In far north Scandinavia a slight change to the normal pattern of dull overcast weather. Moderate snowfalls are expected over the next few days. Powder days are unlikely but certainly enough to create excellent on piste conditions.
