The Back-Up Trust are a national charity that organises outdoor activity and ski courses for people who have been paralysed after breaking
their back or neck. They are currently looking for ski and summer volunteers. Read on for more info... |
The Back-Up Trust is a national charity dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals who have been permanently paralysed after breaking their neck or back, to regain independence and self-belief and rebuild a full and active life.
The charity does this by organising activity based rehabilitation courses incorporating sports such as skiing, water skiing and abseiling. Their winter program of courses focuses on skiing, using specially adapted centres in France, Sweden and America and for this they are always looking able bodied skiers to get in touch and volunteer their skills to help out.

3 people everyday in the UK have an accident or illness which leaves them permanently paralysed. Of this over 65% are aged between 18-35. Adjusting to a new life in a wheelchair is a struggle for anyone and the mental effects of spinal cord injury can be as devastating as the physical with suicide rates 5 times the national average. To date there is no cure. Paralysis is permanent.
Back-Up does not think it is enough to tell a newly paralysed person what they are still capable of. It provides the environment and support for people to prove it to themselves. Its year round programme of activity courses and events are not disabled holidays, but challenging, integrated courses for able bodied and spinally injured.
