Hotel Rubin

Features

  • Half board

The words 'party hotel' might put some people off, for others it might be just what they have been looking for. So here it is - the Hotel Rubin is a party hotel.

If your idea of a good night is being tucked up by 10pm with a nice warm cup of cocoa then you might want to consider a different accommodation. The Rubin has 3 of the best après and late night bars in Söll, right downstairs on the ground floor.

As comes with this sort of territory, you should expect some late night/early morning noise, since the bars are often open until at least 3 or 4am. The excellent Wes and the rest of the team at the Rubin are well aware of this and if you do need an earlier night just ask one of them for a set of ear plugs (or pack some just in case).

The Rubin isn’t just about partying though – they know you want to be on the slopes, so getting some well earned shut-eye and good food is also important.

The location for the slopes isn’t bad for Söll - the ski bus picks up and drops off almost next door to the hotel. Otherwise it’s a little less than 10 minutes on foot to the Hochsöll gondola.

The rooms are practical and comfy. If you’re sharing with friends, some of the rooms have separate beds, otherwise you can get cosy in an Austrian twin – basically two beds that can’t be separated but you get all your own bed sheets. And loads of the rooms have balconies too.

The food is simple, no-nonsense, hearty grub that fills you up and keeps you powering through.

All in all, the Rubin has all the essential ingredients for a fantastic ski and après ski holiday.

All rooms have a cable TV, hairdryer and safe.

Twin room - sleeps 2: Austrian twin beds, private bath or shower and WC.

Small twin room with balcony - sleeps 2: Austrian twin bed, private bath or shower, WC and balcony.

Double room with balcony - sleeps 2: Double bed, private bath or shower, WC and balcony.

Twin room (separate beds) with balcony - sleeps 2: Separate twin beds, private shpwer, WC and balcony.

Triple room with balcony - sleeps 2-3: Austrian twin beds, single bed, private bath or shower, WC and balcony.

Sole occupancy is available at a supplement on request.

Austrian twin beds
Austrian twin beds are very common in Central Europe. They’re simply one large bed frame containing two single mattresses, both with separate duvets and linen sets, that cannot be separated. Separate twin beds are less common and can often be head to head beds, rather than side by side, if they are available.

Söll Resort Info

The Ski Welt area is one of the largest in Austria with a total of 250km of pistes. However, its component parts make the territory rather similar, as it's basically made up of a number of smaller, lift- or bus-linked resorts. You can also access the massive 'Kitzbuheler Alpen' pass for nearly 700km of runs. The traditional view of Soll is of a pretty, cheaper, louder alternative to other Austrian villages, with good nightlife and inexpensive accommodation. While this is still partially true, the resort has consciously tried to up its family appeal by improving its ski school and childcare. Brits make up 20% of all visitors, with the ski area providing good beginner and lower intermediate skiing, decent but inexpensive nightlife and short transfers (45 minutes to Innsbruck). Advanced skiers won't find much to enjoy apart from some off-piste and boarders will only really want to try Soll if they are beginners or lower intermediates. There is a short bus journey to get to the lifts, which have been upgraded to decrease the queues.

Eating out tends to be in the hotel restaurants, while mountain eateries are good but crowded. Soll has a poor snow record and this can really affect a holiday. The SkiWelt has invested heavily in snowmaking facilities (100km of pistes now covered), but Westendorf's altitude is low (622m), shortening the season. However, there are some decent non-skiing activities (walking, sightseeing and indoor sports).

Overall, Soll is a pretty good resort, with lower costs, fine skiing for lower abilities and lively après-ski.

Snow Overview - Austria  (snow news updated 04-Dec-2017)

As the season comes towards its end in Austria, it seems that winter will continue for a little while yet. Fresh snow has been falling across the resorts that remain open, and temperatures have been as low -5C in some places, meaning that conditions up high are excellent for the time of year. Around the Obergurgl region, which is where the majority of our featured resorts are still operating, there has been around 5cm of new snow for Kaunertal (127/194cm), and 20cm for Obergurgl 25/120cm). Although visibility was limited on Thursday due to the continuing snow and cloud, once the current front moves over skiers are likely to find a nice mixture of packed powder on piste and great areas of untouched snow off to the side. Elsewhere, Kitzbuhel (0/70cm) in the Skiwelt was still running 4/57 lifts on Thursday, and received 6cm of new snow overnight. However, whilst conditions up high continue to improve, the lower runs to resort remain closed. Over the remainder of Thursday and into Friday more snow is forecast, and Hintertux (70/235cm) could receive 85cm. The weather is then expected to change on Saturday as a band of high pressure starts to creep in.

European Weather Outlook

Across the central European Alps, snow and cold temperatures are forecast to stick around until Saturday. Accumulations of snow on the upper slopes could be huge for the time of year, with some Swiss resorts predicting around 80cm over the course of today and Friday. By the weekend the snow is predicted to subside in many regions and a mixture of sun and cloud is expected for much of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. In the Pyrenees, Saturday should be the pick of the day for any skiing in Andorra. Our featured resorts are now closed for the season, but for anyone strapping on their skins, you can expect a mixture of sun and cloud, with temperatures around +3C In Germany, 44cm of fresh snow is being forecast for Garmisch (0/380cm), who will be in disbelief at the moment for all the snow they have received of late. Further north you can expect temperatures of around -3C and snow showers in Norway, which are set to continue right through to Sunday for resorts such Trysil. Across the border in Sweden, the weather should be fairly similar, but any snow that does fall is likely to be light and bring only 1-2cm. Despite some recent biting temperatures and cold winds in the UK, any snow that does fall on the Scottish mountains is most likely to be on Thursday. Thereafter, rain could destroy any hopes of some late season turns.
