Obergurgl Resort Info

Obergurgl skiing

Obergurgl is great for beginners and intermediates, which, along with good ski schools, makes for an excellent family ski holiday destination. One of the highest resorts in Austria at 1930m, Obergurgl has an excellent snow record and long season. Linked to Hochgurgl, there are over 100km of runs to enjoy. For more advanced skiers and boarders, there is often some nice off-piste to get that adrenalin pumping, although not much else…

Obergurgl ski resort

The resort itself is pleasing to the eye and offers a sense of alpine charm. Off snow activities are a little sparse, although après ski is jovial without being too hectic. Hotels are generally of a high standard, though there is a lack of independent restaurants (they are pretty much all part of the hotels).

Snow Overview - Austria  (snow news updated 19-Apr-2015)

We have already had a large portion of our featured resorts close for the season but you can still ski in Austria. On Thursday 16th April it was mostly sunny with patches of cloud and overall it was quite hot with some temperatures reaching up to +15C in places. The glacier ski resorts are open and have lots of enjoyable spring time skiing available. Some of the main resorts are still open too with the likes of Obergurgl (20/130cm), St Anton (60/345cm) and Ischgl (0/150cm) all offering pleasant skiing albeit quite slushy and heavy at times but when groomed, a great days skiing is there to be enjoyed. The higher glacial resorts of Pitztal (312/355cm), Kaunertal (288/394cm), Stubai (5/265cm) and the Hintertux (20/290cm) all have plenty of pistes open with firmer slopes at their summits and softer slopes lower down. The off piste conditions are mostly varied and there may be a few rocks poking out from the tracked cover so do take care. Sadly there is some rain in the forecast for slopes below around 2,500m this weekend, but with most of the open resorts having slopes around and above this, there could be some fresh snow to enjoy this weekend.

European Weather Outlook

The mild air is set to remain over the Alps on Thursday before a weather front arrives during Friday, slightly lowering the freezing level. This is set to sadly bring some heavy rain to slopes below around 2,500m – although expect some local variations. By Saturday colder air should drop the snow level to around 2,000m but the precipitation is set to be lighter. On the upper slopes some good powder is very possible with up to 50cm of new snow expected at altitude during the course of the weekend. Rain is expected in the Pyrenees this weekend, providing a damp end to the ski season. Some powder is possible on the very highest slopes, but lower down more snow loss is expected. Glorious sunny weather is forecast in Bulgaria until Saturday, before the temperature drops significantly overnight in to Sunday, accompanied by some light snowfall. Expect warm and mostly sunny springtime weather in Scandinavia over the weekend and into next week. More clouds are expected in Sweden, with a little light snow possible although there is a good chance of some nice sunny breaks too. The clouds are set to clear from Scotland during Friday to leave a sunny and warm weekend –perfect for setting up spring snow conditions. This weather pattern is forecast to continue well into next week.
