Pas de la Casa Resort Info

Set high on the border into France, Pas de la Casa really does feel like a frontier town. Loads of French and British descend, looking for tax-free bargains and plenty of cheap booze, and this makes the après-ski extremely lively. It's tacky and rather ugly, but serves a purpose, while the snow record in the Grandvalira ski area is excellent. Pas de la Casa is an ideal winter package holiday for 16-25 year olds on a tight budget. The skiing itself, which covers the linked areas of Grau Roig and Soldeu, is the largest in the Pyrenees, with 150km of pistes. It caters mostly to easy cruising, while boarders are much in evidence on the slopes.

There are all sorts of accommodation, from apartments to hotels, most of which you can ski to. These serve the various clientele, the young in the former, families in the latter. On-piste restaurants are better in Grau Roig, but most are no more than snack bars. The resort eateries are generally Spanish in cuisine and are largely cheap and cheerful.

Pas de la Casa is easy to knock if you are looking for bags of Alpine charm. But, if you want to have effortless skiing and lots of nightlife, it makes a cheap and understandably popular destination. It is, however, a long transfer from Barcelona or Toulouse. More Pas de la Casa resort information

Snow Overview - Andorra  (snow news updated 31-Jan-2012)

The riding in Andorra is superb following heavy snowfall over the weekend. Around 50cm of new snow fell on Sunday 29th January then the sun won through on Monday 30th providing excellent visibility to take advantage of all of the new snow. The greatest depth change was reported at Pal/Arinsal (70/110cm) where the snow depth was reported as 20cm on the lower slopes and 40cm on the upper slopes on Friday 27th January then the depths had increased to 70cm and 110cm respectively on Monday. Clouds are expected to move back in for Tuesday 31st January and Wednesday 1st February and this weather could see a further dusting of snow before the sun returns for the end of this week.

European Weather Outlook

Cloudy and snowy skies are expected to loiter over the vast majority of European resorts over the coming days although only a light level of snowfall, around 1-2cm each day, is anticipated throughout the week. Sunshine is then expected to make a come back for the vast majority of resorts by the end of this week or the start of next week. The southern French Alpine resort of Isola 2000 however could receive up to 27cm of fresh snow on Tuesday 31st January, bucking the trend of just a dusting. The other weather news of note is that temperatures are set to drop, getting below -20C in many locations by the end of this week, so make sure you have some nice warm layers to put on.
