Weather more akin to winter is expected to bring some fresh snow to the Austrian glaciers this weekend.

The summer ski season has now ended at Whistler in Canada. Timberline in the USA operates two lifts in the morning on typically summery snow.

New Zealand has some superb skiing on offer after yet more fresh snow in many places. Base depths of over two metres in some areas are great for the time of year.

Resorts in Chile and Argentina received some fresh snow as well. Valle Nevado in Chile is enjoying the cold weather after recent fresh snow. There’s plenty of light and fluffy powder to be enjoyed off piste too.

Snow reports for Austria Austria

The Austrian glaciers are in for some fresh snow on Thursday and Friday the 29th and 30th July.

Hintertux (125cm) is expecting 15cm of fresh snow over the course of the two days. The snow will fall mainly above about 2700m and is a great boost to their skiing in the middle of summer. In the meantime, the skiing is fairly limited due to the poor weather.

Three lifts are running on the Molltal Glacier (150cm) and like Hintertux snow is on its way. There isn’t as much skiing on the Molltal Glacier as at Hintertux but the pistes are in good summer condition and are likely to improve with the fresh snow that’s due to arrive on Thursday night.

Snow reports for France France

Tignes (60cm) and Les Deux Alpes (100cm) are both still open for summer skiing.

The snow on the Grande Motte glacier at Tignes is getting quite thin now and there are patches of rock and bare ice in the middle of some runs. They still have eight lifts running however and there is the potential for a dusting of snow above 3200m on Friday 30th July.

Snow reports for Switzerland Switzerland

Saas Fee (132cm) received a bonus 10cm of fresh snow last week which is surprising for July. Nevertheless it’s good news for the snow and they are still benefitting from it nearly a week later.

Despite no new snow being reported at Zermatt (173cm) there is still plenty of great summer riding to enjoy. All of the summer pistes are open, comprising four red runs and two blue ones.

It’s expected to be very sunny and warm over the weekend but there is the potential for some showers on Monday 2nd August.

Snow reports for Italy Italy

80cm of snow up on the Plateau Rosa glacier at Cervinia (80cm) ensures most of the runs are complete and in good condition. The glacier is fairly flat so most of the skiing is very easy but the snow is in good condition for the middle of summer.

Val Senales (240cm) has a great snow base and offers good skiing as a result. The weather should be warm and sunny for most of the coming ten days.

Snow reports for USA Snow reports for North America North America

The Blackcomb Glacier at Whistler has now closed for the summer ski season. They will reopen again in November for the start of the winter season.

The conditions remain relatively unchanged at Timberline (150cm) in America with good skiing available on the Palmer Snowfield. Summer riding dominates with the snow firming up overnight, providing packed snow first thing in the morning. The piste conditions then soften as the morning warms up and the snow can get quite wet and heavy towards the end of the morning’s ski session. Sunny weather is forecast all week.

South America

Chile

Valle Nevado (70cm) has some superb conditions both on and off piste. The temperature has remained cold for a while now and the snow has built up well thanks to consistent snowfall. Most of the ski area is open and there are plenty of off piste opportunities. Hit the slopes early for the freshest and must untracked snow.

Termas de Chillan (120/260cm) has by far the deepest snow pack of our Chilean resorts. Six of their seven lifts are reported to be running and with the impressive base depth, there is plenty of good skiing around. Lots of soft powder can be found off piste.

Argentina

Strong winds are affecting all three of our featured Argentinean resorts. Gusts of up to 80mph mean the lift operation at Cerro Catedral (10/150cm) was quite hit and miss on Wednesday 28th July. There was some light snow falling at the time but it wouldn’t have made any impact on the snow conditions due to the wind. The best of the snow is actually lower down, where it’s slightly more sheltered.

Australia

Snow conditions across Australia have deteriorated somewhat with the mild temperatures and rain that are affecting the country at the moment.

The slopes, especially low down, are a bit soft and wet due to a cloudy and drizzly day on Thursday 29th July. Perisher (36cm) has plenty of terrain open but the low cloud and poor visibility made for a pretty miserable ski day. The snow isn’t great either due to the drizzle

This warm and wet weather should give way to colder and snowier weather by Saturday 31st August. Mt Hotham is expecting up to 35cm of fresh snow to fall by the end of next week, which is great news.

New Zealand

New Zealand has some of the best snow in the world at the moment. Plenty of snow, cold weather and sunshine make for the ideal combination and that’s what you can find at many resorts.

The deepest base in the country is at Mt Lyford (230cm). They received a whopping 60cm of fresh snow last week and this means the snow is in great condition now too. 10cm also fell on Tuesday 27th July to help keep it superb. Skiing on and off piste is awesome and the weather is nearly perfect to match. It should remain this way for the weekend too.

Cardrona (90cm) has pretty good snow as well. Their base depth isn’t as deep as Mt Lyford’s but this doesn’t mean the skiing is any worse. It’s best to stick on piste as there are quite a few rocks still showing through off piste. The well groomed runs are a joy to ski.

The snow on the north island is very similar to that of the south island. Turoa (135cm) has a good base depth now thanks to quite a snowy July. -3°C was the temperature at mid mountain on Thursday 29th July so there shouldn’t be much melting.
