How can I prevent getting my skis stolen from outside mountain restaurants and what should I do if it does happen?

Separate your skis or swap one ski with someone else. If they are stolen, you should report it to the police, your insurers and the ski hire shop (if applicable) as soon as you can.

If I damage or lose my rental skis will they be covered by my insurance?

Check your policy. Shops will charge you the replacement cost, so make sure you are covered up to a reasonable value. They will expect you to pay up front and then claim it back. However, many shops now offer their own separate insurance to cover theft and damage, so you won't have to pay a penny in the resort.

What happens if I have an accident on the slopes and end up at medical centre after a hair-raising blood wagon ride and a heli-rescue, but with no money?

Usually your skis will be kept as a guarantee of payment when you are rescued from the mountain. The ambulance company will take your details and bill you later. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible. This should save you from paying up front. To make life easier, some insurance companies provide a waterproof card with an international emergency number that you can take on the slopes.

I want to ski off-piste with some of my friends who know the area that I am going to very well. Will my package holiday insurance cover me?

Most policies that do cover you off-piste stipulate that you must be with a qualified guide. If you do want to ski without a guide, you may be able to find a specialist policy that will cost more. In France, you can buy the Carte Neige insurance, which is available at most lift ticket offices.

What happens if I become ill on holiday and need to see a doctor? I've heard that you have to pay for all healthcare abroad. Is that true?

Certainly in most other European countries and the States healthcare is not free. However, if you are travelling to a country in the European Union, pick up an E111 at your local post office and at least then you may be able to claim back some of what you paid. In the States, make sure you are adequately covered by insurance.
